Liverpool eye overhaul after full seven days of training

Jurgen Klopp, manager of Liverpool, during the Premier League match against Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield on May 5, 2024

Liverpool gave themselves a chance to end the season on a high after a well-deserved victory against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.

A comprehensive 4-2 triumph secured revenge for the controversial defeat in London in September and cemented the Reds in the Premier League’s top three.

Liverpool now turn their attention to their final away game of the season with a trip to Aston Villa next Monday. And here we look forward to what changes Jurgen Klopp might make in his team’s next action.

Question Tsimikas

With third place assured and the top two likely out of reach by the time Liverpool take the field at Villa Park, the Reds will be playing largely for pride in the final two games of Klopp’s tenure.

And it could give the Reds boss the opportunity to offer exits to a number of his fringe players as he bids farewell after almost nine years in charge at Anfield.

Alisson Becker and Caoimhin Kelleher have featured prominently between the sticks this season, with the former returning to form after returning from injury. Kelleher, however, could be out next week, while Adrian, who is expected to leave in the summer, has not played a Premier League match in more than three years.

In central defense, Ibrahima Konate has not played since being substituted in the derby defeat at Everton and will be hoping to earn some minutes, although Jarell Quansah was on credit for partner Virgil van Dijk. Joel Matip saw his season end in December and will not play again for the time being for Liverpool.

Trent Alexander-Arnold retained the right-back spot despite Conor Bradley being fit again while Joe Gomez is another option, but it was intriguing that left-back Kostas Tsimikas did not make the bench against Tottenham with the versatile Gomez replacing first choice. Andy Robertson midway through the second half.

Szoboszlai wait

Wataru Endo has started five of the last six Premier League matches and, with Alexis Mac Allister the only realistic alternative at number six, he would be expected to finish the campaign in that position. Stefan Bajectic made his long-awaited return from injury this weekend as a substitute, but is not ready for a start.

Mac Allister is a regular on the left of the midfield triumvirate, but could be subject to rotation, with Ryan Gravenberch having done well in recent starts. Curtis Jones is another option. On the right, Harvey Elliott was extremely impressive against Tottenham but could be challenged by Dominik Szoboszlai – who has only started two of the last seven games – or Gravenberch. Mac Allister can also play this role if Klopp wants to completely renovate his engine room.

Bobby Clark and Thiago Alcantara will not play again this season with youngsters James McConnell and Trey Nyoni on duty for the under-21s in the Premier League 2 play-offs.

Nunez returns?

The big talking point after the weekend was Darwin Nunez’s reaction to criticism on social media after a disappointing appearance against Tottenham. Nunez has been benched in four of the last eight games with Cody Gakpo the in-form man at the center of the attack.

Much could depend on whether Diogo Jota returns as expected following injury, with the Portuguese able to play in the middle or on the left, where Gakpo can also do a job and Luis Diaz has been the starter. Mohamed Salah’s performance against Tottenham suggests he is now back fit on the right flank. Ben Doak remains injured while Kaide Gordon is with the U21s.
