An Illinois track star just made history

An Illinois track and field athlete had never been named national athlete of the week during the outdoor season — until Monday.

Freshman long jumper Sophia Beckmon earned the honor after a long jump of 6.86m this weekend.

With the jump, the Oregon native shattered the conference record and tied a U20 record set last year at the NCAA Championships.

Beckmon now sits 11th in the NCAA’s all-time rankings.

She also broke a 17-year-old school long jump record during the indoor season in January.
