Italian FA closes Dumfries – investigation into Theo Banner

The Italian Football Federation has closed its investigation into a banner held up by Denzel Dumfries insulting Theo Hernandez.

Today’s printed edition of the Roman newspaper Corriere dello Sport, via FCInterNewsreport that FA prosecutors will offer the Inter Milan winger a plea bargain.

The weekend before yesterday, Inter held their Serie A title celebration parade.

The Nerazzurri took an open-top bus from San Siro to Piazza Duomo through the streets of Milan after their match against Torino. Reportedly, more than 300,000 fans attended the celebrations.

At one point during the celebrations, Inter winger Denzel Dumfries held up a banner.

The banner depicted the Dutchman with AC Milan defender Theo Hernandez as a dog on a leash.

It was a little joke aimed at the Frenchman, who has a bit of history with Dumfries.

Hernandez and Dumfries were sent off in the closing stages of the derby in which Inter clinched the title with a 2-1 victory over their city rivals.

This is not the first incident in which the two men have clashed in derby matches.

Inter president Steven Zhang had urged his players to “defend Inter’s values” and celebrate in a respectful and sporting manner when they won the title.

However, Dumfries couldn’t resist trying Hernandez after the events of the derby.

Italian FA closes investigation into Dumfries banner targeting Theo

This is not the first time in recent years that an incident of this nature has occurred during a celebratory parade.

Ironically, one high-profile incident involved Hernandez himself.

The Frenchman was one of four Milan players – along with Rade Krunic, Sandro Tonali and Mike Maignan – who held up anti-Inter banners during the Rossoneri’s 2021-22 title celebrations.

And Nicolo Zaniolo also did it during Roma’s parade in the 2022 Europa Conference League.

In these cases, the players involved received fines from the Italian Football Federation.

This was a violation of Article 4 of the Code of Sports Justice in Italy. This is the article that concerns “fairness and sportsmanship” in sport.

These fines all came after plea agreements between the players in question and the FA.

And according to Corriere, it would be a similar situation with Dumfries.

Prosecutors closed their investigation into the banner mocking Hernandez.

They will offer the Dutchman a plea deal.
