WEST MONROE, Louisiana. (KTVE/KARD) – Louisiana lawmakers are exploring the possibility of placing restrictions on certain foods eligible for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits.

In 2022, residents of Louisiana, Oklahoma, and West Virginia reported obesity rates above 40% to the CDC. Louisiana’s vibrant community and renowned food culture are potential contributors to the state’s high obesity rates.

The Louisiana Department of Health and healthcare professionals have faced the challenge of the obesity crisis for a long time, as it poses significant health risks such as diabetes, heart disease, stroke and cancer .

Today, State Rep. Troy Romero is seeking support from Congress through HCR105. The resolution aims to adjust SNAP eligibility by excluding specific food items, potentially aiding obesity prevention efforts. Additionally, the resolution highlights the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s approval of using SNAP funds for unhealthy food purchases, while recognizing Louisiana’s Greaux the Good program, which encourages the purchase of more fruits and vegetables.

The program emphasizes the benefits of choosing fresh produce and minimally processed foods for effective weight management over packaged options. State Rep. Jack McFarland, who launched the program, said, “As someone who has advocated for expanding opportunities for SNAP recipients to access quality, healthy foods and vegetables …one being the Greaux the Good program. »

Currently, the program operates in 52 of the 64 parishes.
