Kumar Sangakkara breaks silence on controversial dismissal of Sanju Samson after heated on-field discussion during DC vs RR

The match between Delhi Capitals and Rajasthan Royals saw controversy erupt during the latter’s final runs chase, as Sanju Samson’s seemingly controversial decision for a catch created a major uproar on the platforms social media. Samson was caught by Shai Hope at the long boundary as he struck brilliantly on 84; the side angle showed Hope’s foot dangerously close to the boundary line, with many believing he had also touched the rope. However, there was no conclusive evidence to prove the same, leading the TV referee to rule out the RR skipper.

Samson had a heated discussion with the on-field umpire, and the RR dugout was also visibly unhappy with the dismissal. Among the many in their dugout who appeared upset by the call was Kumar Sangakkara, the Royals’ director of cricket. He also attended the post-match press conference, where he spoke in detail about the dismissal.

Sangakkara explained in detail the team’s opinion on the dismissal and also spoke about the conversations with the referees.

“It depends on the replays and the angles. Sometimes it feels like the foot has touched itself. It was difficult for the third referee to judge; the game was at a crucial stage, but it happened. We have different views, but at the end of the day, you have to stick to the decision made by the third umpire, even if we have a different opinion on it. Of course we will share it with the referees, but I thought that regardless of that we should have seen the game at home. Delhi played well,” Sangakkara told reporters after RR’s defeat.

“I’m just asking what the procedure was and if there was any doubt. The on-field referee must follow what the television referee says. Players must comply with this and there are ways to convey your opinion through direct conversation or the referee’s report. We follow protocol; there is a lot of pressure on the players and the referees. We’re trying to sort this out in the best way possible.

Samson’s dismissal is a game-changer

The layoff ultimately prompted the Capitals to make a comeback in the game, as none of the hitters in the lineup were able to continue their momentum. The Royals ultimately lost by 30 points, facing a third defeat in their campaign. However, the team remains second on the points table and is four points behind Chennai Super Kings, who are also their next opponents.

DC, meanwhile, recorded their sixth victory of the campaign and have 12 points from as many matches. With this close victory, they returned to contention for a playoff spot.
