With Halloween quickly approaching, trick-or-treaters and costumed party-goers are getting ready to show off their 2024 looks. For those in need of last-minute inspiration, Google Trends has released its annual “Frightgeist” list of the 25 most popular costumes of the year .

The rankings are based on a comparison of Google search interest in the United States in September 2023 and September 2024. In other words, the list reflects the outfits that “experienced the greatest increase in search interest year over year,” in Instead of “the main ones I researched costume ideas in general,” writes Michael Bartiromo of Nexstar Media Group.

According to Google, this year’s most popular costume is Shrunken Head Bob from Beetle juice Beetle juicea recently released sequel to the 1988 cult classic. Although the big-headed man in a big yellow suit doesn’t play the main role in the new film, the character has already become an iconic part of the franchise.

Rounding out the top three are Raygun, the Australian breakdancer who received zero points for her performance at the Paris Summer Olympics, and CatNap, a purple cat villain from the video game “Poppy Playtime,” who takes players to a factory for abandoned toys populated by sentient toys.

Last year, the number one costume was Barbie — a trend that makes sense given Barbie’s status as one of the two biggest movies of summer 2023. Google’s latest list shows that pop culture-inspired looks are gaining traction again, with a few exceptions (like the 11th-place Chipotle burrito) aside.

Various characters from Inside Out 2 appear in the rankings, including the personified emotions of Envy, Anger, Disgust, Anxiety and Joy. Superhero favorites like Lady Deadpool, Wolverine and Gambit do Deadpool and Wolverine spinoff also made the cut. And Bob wasn’t the only one Beetle juice Beetle juice character to attract research interest: Delores, the ex-wife of the titular antagonist, and Delia and Lydia Deetz, a stepmother and stepdaughter duo from the original film and sequel, also appear on the list.

“This year, we’re seeing a fascinating return of timeless Halloween looks, fueled by a mix of nostalgia, viral trends, and recent pop culture influences,” writes Google Trends expert Hibaq Ali in a blog post. “And it’s clear that DIY is king.”

Some costumes on the list are inspired by real people. Pop singer Sabrina Carpenter, whose hits “Please Please Please” and “Espresso” dominated the summer charts, came in at No. 9, while rapper Soulja Boy came in at No. 24.

In addition to general costume trends, the Google site features an interactive map that shows which costumes are popular in different areas of the country. Luna Lovegood’s Harry Potter the franchise tops the list in Tulsa, Oklahoma, for example, while Bigfoot is number one in Tallahassee, Florida. The site also tracks trends in several costume categories, including the most popular children’s costumes (Disney’s Red Descendants is number one), duo looks (topped by Wolverine and Deadpool) and dog costumes (with Dogpool, a canine version of Deadpool, ranking highest).
