Lawyers are seeking exemption from stricter rules

Bar associations have called for exceptions to strict anti-money laundering rules, arguing that proposed requirements to enforce greater due diligence and expand reporting requirements will reduce the number of lawyers, drive up costs and restrict access to will hinder the judge.

In their submissions to a Senate inquiry into the legislation, six law associations said the current wording of the bill paves the way for unnecessary duplication. The lawyers say that since lawyers will be forced to conduct background checks on clients, there is no reason for them to repeat the work.
