This is how much Checkers Sixty60 drivers earn

We’ve all seen them on the roads, but have you ever wondered how many? Checkers Sixty60 drivers earn?

In typical South African fashion, it’s a little more complicated than you think…

No. 1 shopping app

Checkers Sixty60 has taken South Africa by storm since its launch in 2019.

It is the number 1 grocery app in South Africa, with over five million downloads and available in 505 locations.

Their teal colored bicycles have changed the way South Africans shop, giving consumers a more efficient and convenient way to get groceries to their doorstep.

While it has made life easier for millions of people, have you ever wondered what a Sixty60 driver makes per month?

Recently, complaints and allegations have surfaced about the treatment of these delivery drivers.

One of the biggest complaints is that they are not considered employees and underpaid.

According to TopAutoSixty60 delivery drivers are considered ‘independent contractors’ and not permanent employees of the brand.

“Drivers are independent contractors; Drivers receive compensation based on their contractual agreement to provide a service and are therefore not salaried employees,” the company said.

Checkers outsources the entire logistics of the delivery platform to its partner, Pingoa joint venture between Shoprite (Checkers’ parent company) and RTT Logistics.

Criticized

The practice was severely criticized by Democratic Alliance MP and lawyer Michael Bagraim, who said it could encourage risky behavior and put pressure on drivers to spend more time on the road than they probably should.

“They don’t receive any benefits, and they have no protection under our labor laws,” Bagraim said.

“It forces the alleged workers to make as many trips as possible, putting their lives at risk,” he said Ground up.

Fired for addressing problems

In the meantime, MyBroadband reported on the payment these drivers receive, with a former Sixty60 operator spilling the beans.

According to the anonymous person who worked at the Checkers store in Heiderand Mall Mossel Bay from September 2022 to February 2024, when they were reportedly fired after addressing issues faced by the drivers on their delivery team, riders typically earn approximately R7 600 per month.

BUT!

Checkers Sixty60 drivers are said to have encountered problems when Pingo removed the €350,- minimum daily compensation that drivers would receive regardless of the number of trips they made.

This led to a stay-away strike and the minimum daily rate was reinstated.

The anonymous former employee explained that the average monthly income of R7 600 includes this daily fee of R350.

Coverage of own fuel costs

In the meantime, drivers should cover their cars own fuel costs and bicycle rental costs.

“Fuel costs were R3 200 per month, and bike rental was R400 per week, leaving a rider with R2 800 in net monthly income.”

Without a minimum rate, this total would be much lower.

The source said if riders made 13 or more deliveries, they would earn R30 to R35 per delivery, and if they did not make 13, they would get the minimum amount.

According to MyBroadbandsupposedly it was the minimum amount DELETED again shortly after the first strike, leading to another stay-away strike.
