The Turkish government has agreed to take seven Bangladeshis injured during the student-led anti-discrimination movement to Turkey in July last year and provide free medical treatment at the request of Bangladesh’s foreign ministry.

“The Turkish side recently confirmed it to us… this generous decision shows that the Turkish government stands with the interim government of Bangladesh,” Foreign Ministry Director General for Eastern Europe and CIS Wing Md. . Abul Hasan Mridha today to BSS.
Since the Turkish government agreed to provide free medical treatment, he said, the Health Ministry will now decide in coordination with the Turkish authority which seven injured people will be sent there.

This cooperation reflects the growing ties between Bangladesh and Turkey, especially in response to Bangladesh’s current needs during the transition period, Mridha said.

The decision came after Foreign Affairs Advisor Ambassador Md. Touhid Hossain, and Foreign Minister Ambassador Md. Jasim Uddin, met with the Turkish ambassador to discuss advanced medical treatment for those injured during the movement.

On August 27, 2024, during a telephone conversation with Chief Advisor Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan expressed interest in supporting reform initiatives of the interim government of Bangladesh.

Later, a Turkish government delegation visited Bangladesh from October 13 to 15 to explore areas of cooperation.

The delegation held talks with relevant Bangladeshi ministries and agencies on possible Turkish support for reforms in the electoral system, financial sector and other key areas.
