FFXIV continues to be hit by DDOS attacks non-stop

For some unknown reason, Final Fantasy XIV (FFXIV) has suffered almost non-stop DDOS attacks from an unknown attacker. This has been going on for at least a week already.

The critically acclaimed MMORPG FFXIV has been the target of relentless DDOS attacks, with the latest taking place today, May 12, 2024, approximately 8:39 a.m. PDT. According to the official post on Lodestone, the DDOS attack caused the following:

  • Disconnect from worlds
  • Difficulty connecting to Worlds
  • Difficulty accessing, sending and receiving data from data centers

It is not yet known whether the server has already recovered from the DDOS attack.

This is the latest in a series of DDOS attacks that FFXIV has suffered over the past week. The first DDOS attack occurred on May 6, 2024, and others occurred on May 7, 9, and 10, 2024. These DDOS attacks did not only target North American (NA) data centers , but also Europe (EU). Japan (JP) and Oceania (OC).

If you are an FFXIV player who was playing when the DDOS attacks, it would be a good idea to log out of the game and refrain from playing it first. Attacks usually disappear after a few hours and servers recover shortly thereafter.

What could be the reason for DDOS attacks on FFXIV?

Although these DDOS attacks have been hitting FFXIV for over a week now, it is still unclear what caused the attack, or who is responsible. Of course, there are various theories circulating online.

Theories on why DDOS attacks occur?

Some players mention that it is likely that the service used by Square Enix to prevent DDOS attacks is currently under maintenance. As such, some took the opportunity to attack the game with DDOS.

Others point out that some people are probably unhappy with Square Enix, especially because of recent changes to its payment methods. This caused them to DDOS the game in retaliation for the change.

Still others mention that it could simply be that someone is testing the game’s DDOS resilience, to the detriment of its players. This could either be the work of an outside group or Square Enix itself.

Regardless, most of these theories are just that: theories. If more reliable information becomes available, we will be sure to let you know.

What have DDOS attacks affected in FFXIV?

Of course, the most obvious problem caused by DDOS attacks in FFXIV is the extreme lag that players have started experiencing. For example, raids would get stuck and not continue their mechanics. In some cases, players were even unable to see the enemy they were fighting.

Players are also reporting that they are experiencing connection issues, either due to long queues or the inability to connect to FFXIV servers themselves.

However, perhaps the funniest incident this DDOS caused involved the game’s fishing lines. One of the first DDOS attacks was riding the window to catch one of the rarest fish in the game: the Suiten Ippeki .

This fish has a very long wait between catch windows (about a week or so), so some players have been almost unable to catch the fish thanks to DDOS attacks.

Of course, this is just a small sample of all players affected by DDOS attacks.

We can only hope and pray that the DDOS attacks on FFXIV stop soon.
