Bear sightings in the Rochester, New York area: more information can be found on the NYSDEC website

Police stressed the importance of consulting resources provided by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) for more guidance on animal safety, especially in urban settings like Batavia and other parts of the Rochester area.

“Bears will readily utilize human-created food sources and repeated access may make them more adventurous,” according to the NYSDEC. “This can lead to increased conflicts between humans and bears around homes and residential areas, particularly when natural food sources are scarce. Intentionally feeding bears is illegal.”

For inquiries, concerns, or more information regarding bear sightings or other wildlife encounters, residents are encouraged to contact NYSDEC.
