3. When you reach the end of the first row, pass the needle back through the fabric, from back to front, using the hole immediately below the last stitch. Cross the last stitch to make a small x and then return to the beginning of the row, crossing each existing stitch with another to make an x.

4. At the end of this row of six crosses, move the pattern down to the next row, which has seven black cross stitches, and then to the row below, which has eight black cross stitches. A marker can be useful for keeping track of the points you have already completed.
