Golfer Rory McIlroy breaks silence on divorce from Erica Stoll

Professional golfer Rory McIlroy does not want to divorce his wife Erica Stoll be controversial.

“Rory McIlroy’s communications team have today confirmed that a divorce has been filed,” a spokesperson for McIlroy told the Irish Star on Tuesday (May 14). “They emphasized Rory’s desire to make this difficult time as respectful and friendly as possible. He will make no further comment.”

McIlroy, 35, filed a legal request to end his marriage in Florida on Monday, May 13. Us every week confirmed. The filing said the marriage was “irretrievably broken” and revealed the couple had a prenuptial agreement. According to ESPN, McIlroy exploited Thomas J. Sasserthe same lawyer who represented Tiger Woods in his highly publicized divorce from his ex-wife, Elin Nordegrenin 2010.

The divorce filing came days before this weekend’s 2024 PGA Championship, where McIlroy is one of the favorites to win. He won the major in 2014.

“What I love is that we were friends before anything romantic happened,” McIlroy told the Irish Independent of her relationship with Stoll in January 2017. “We met while she was working for the PGA of America and renting a condo in Palm Beach, and I found it refreshing to be with someone who lived a normal life rather than saying ‘Oh!’ My plane is 30 minutes late.’”

The couple got engaged in Paris in 2015 and married in a castle in Ireland two years later. McIlroy praised Stoll during a 2015 appearance at Facebook headquarters in Dublin.

“For me, Erica brings such a level of normalcy to everything. She has a calming presence, a serenity and that doesn’t just depend on me; this is noticeable in any business. She never wants to be the center of attention and is always very comfortable in the background,” he said. McIlroy and Stoll then welcomed their daughter, Poppy, in 2020.
