DAF Announces Changes to Compensation for Airmen and Guardians with Dependents Attending Training > Little Rock Air Force Base > Article View

ARLINGTON, Va. (AFNS) — Effective May 7, Airmen and guardians with dependents making a permanent change of station to a location of professional military education or training are now eligible to receive per diem benefits. up to the basic allowance for accommodation without dependent rates. Airmen and guards may receive this per diem if they are at the training location for less than a year and return to their previous place of duty.

THE updated policy allows military personnel with dependents to maintain two households, continuing to receive BAH at the “dependents” rate for their former place of service where their family resides, as well as receiving a daily allowance in the amount of BAH at the “no dependents” rate for the school or place of training.

To receive this benefit, the member must return to his or her former duty station after completing education or training and cannot live in free government housing.

“We understand that these short trips, while necessary, can disrupt the lives and finances of Airmen and guardians with their families – particularly in situations where they must return to their original duty station,” said Assistant Secretary of the Air Force for Manpower and Reserve Affairs Alex Wagner. “This new allocation gives our service members and their families additional resources to get through these times without the added stress of financial uncertainties.”

The new policy was governed by the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2023 and was reflected in the Joint Travel Regulations, November. 1, 2023.

Members will receive retroactive payments if they meet the eligibility criteria established during a course they attended in December or later.. 23, 2022.

This effort does not replace the Temporary Duty Waiver Policy for Formal Training, which allows Airmen and tutors to complete courses lasting between 141 and 180 days in a TDY status instead of a PCS status.
