Father of two who died in Carlow attack identified as woman, aged 30, arrested

A man who died in an attack on Monday night in the town of Carlow has been identified locally.

Darren Quigley, 30, of New Oak Estate, was discovered with serious injuries after Gardaí responded to an incident at a house on the same estate shortly after 11.40pm.

Quigley was treated at the scene before being taken to St Luke’s General Hospital in Kilkenny, where he was later pronounced dead.

A woman, in her 30s, was arrested during a follow-up operation in Carlow town a short time later, involving local police and the Armed Response Unit.

The woman, who is also from Carlow, knew Quigley, sources confirmed.

Police sources indicated they are investigating whether the death was drug-related.

The site was preserved for forensic examination and the State Pathologist was requested.

A senior investigating officer has been appointed to lead the investigation and family liaison officers have also been provided.

Police say they are not looking for anyone else in connection with the investigation.

They are appealing for any witnesses, particularly anyone with dashcam footage (including dash cam) in the New Oak Estate and surrounding areas at the time of the incident, to contact Carlow Garda Station on 059-9136620, the Confidential Line Garda on 1800 666 111, or any Garda station.

Quigley is survived by his parents Ton and Michelle, daughters Ava and Erica, and brother Adam.

His death notice reads: ‘His loving daughters, parents, brother, grandmother Agnes, aunts, uncles, cousins, relatives and friends will miss him greatly.’

Condolences were paid online following the tragic death.

One person said: “Tony and family our sincere condolences on your huge loss, there are no words at this time but please know we are thinking of you all.”

Another wrote: “RIP Darren, condolences to the entire Quigley family at this time.”

A third added: “Condolences to all the family and friends. Rest in peace.
