(ABC 6 News) – Two endurance athletes are running across the United States to support cancer patients. One of them, Roman Bermo, began his trip in New York and stopped at the American Cancer Society Hope Lodge in Rochester on Thursday evening.

Bermo has been around for 46 years, 22 of which were in honor of cancer patients. The American Cancer Society employee began his run on April 2 and is scheduled to finish on June 2. He describes his journey as that of a person suffering from cancer.

“We thought about the first day, April 2, about the 31 miles a day and the 1,800 miles we are going to travel on the cancer journey, on the treatment journey. Then, June 2, which is National Cancer Survivors Day, Survivorship. So we’re trying to raise awareness and give hope to those who are staying at the Hope Lodges,” Bermo told ABC 6.

When he and the other athlete meet in Omaha at the Hope Lodge, they will finish the final miles with cancer survivors. Both average 31 miles per day and are scheduled to travel to Omaha on June 2.
