Scottie Scheffler has released his first statement since he was accused of assaulting a police officer after a chaotic morning at the PGA Championship in Kentucky.

The world number one was handcuffed and taken to a downtown Louisville police station after he was seen trying to avoid traffic and enter Valhalla Golf Club following a fatal crash outside the site earlier in the morning. A man who was supposed to work on the tournament died after being hit by a shuttle bus around 5 a.m. local time.

About an hour later, Scheffler headed toward the course but found himself handcuffed as he was approached by police officers while trying to avoid traffic. The 27-year-old has since been charged with second-degree assault on a police officer, third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving and failure to obey signals from traffic officers.

Scheffler was released after being charged and arrived in Valhalla with less than an hour before his departure time of 3:08 p.m. BST.

Scheffler posted on Instagram: “This morning I was moving according to the instructions of the police officers. It was a very chaotic situation, which is understandable given the tragic accident that had happened earlier, and there was a big misunderstanding about what I thought I was being asked to do.

“It was never my intention to ignore any of the instructions. I hope I can put that aside and focus on golf today.
