Acclaimed Tasmanian artist George Davis has died aged 94.

Davis, who is the father of Australian actress Essie Davis, is known for his paintings of Tasmanian birds, plants and landscapes.

One of his most famous works of art is a large mosaic mural in the former ABC and Tasmanian Conservatory of Music buildings in Hobart.

Davis was commissioned in 1961 to create the 19-foot mural after winning a design competition.

The mosaic is made up of 150,000 pieces of glass and inspired the ABC logo.

His daughter Essie previously said she thought the mural was “a great work of art.”

“I was always very proud of my father’s work. He is an extremely fine artist, a master draftsman and a colorist, an observer of nature and humanity,” she told ABC.

“I think if you make a great work of art like this, you hope it lasts forever because that’s how we remember culture.”
