NHRC lens on 'lack of facilities' on Bhadrak consumer forum

Bhubaneswar: National Human rights Commission (NHRC) has ordered the subdistrict court judge Bhadrak to address the perceived absence of essential facilities, especially toilets, in the district consumer forum‘s office.
The NHRC issued the order on October 30 after hearing a petition filed by human rights activist and lawyer Radhakanta tripopathy. In his petition, Tripathy highlighted the alleged deplorable condition of public facilities at the District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission office in Bhadrak. The building lacks essential infrastructure including toilets, clean drinking water and proper access as unauthorized vendors block the entrance, he alleged.
The petition highlighted that the deteriorating condition of the consumer forum, poor accessibility and insufficient public awareness violates the human rights of 15 lakh residents and consumers seeking justice in Bhadrak district.
Seeking the intervention of the committee for improvements, Tripathy’s petition outlined the worrying situation at the office, which mainly serves consumers from underserved areas. The current conditions are a violation of both human and fundamental rights, he argued.
Tripathy urged the NHRC to direct the relevant authorities to treat the matter as urgent. In response, NHRC has directed the district collector to take necessary steps and submit a report on the action taken within four weeks.
