Tellico Plains High School senior, cross country star dies in car crash

LOUDON COUNTY, Tenn. (WVLT) – The Tellico Plains community is mourning the loss of a high school student and star athlete.

Monroe County Sheriff Tommy Jones confirmed to WVLT News that Tellico Plains High School standout Darrah Wiseman was killed in a car crash on I-75 in Loudon County on Saturday.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol could not confirm whether it was the fatal crash near mile marker 80 on I-75 that WVLT News reported on Saturday. Additional information will be released when the THP releases its preliminary report.

Monroe County Mayor Mitch Ingram said in a statement that Wiseman was a senior the entire county was proud of.

It is with a heavy heart that I share the news of a precious young life that has been lost. Darrah Wiseman was a senior at Tellico Plains High School, but she made the entire county proud. Our hearts are broken and words seem inadequate in the face of such deep sorrow.

As we grieve together, let us come together in prayer for her family, friends, classmates and all whose lives were forever touched by Darrah. May God grant her family peace, strength and comfort in these difficult days. We are there for each other and stand united in love and support.

Wiseman was a star cross country runner at TPHS and qualified for the state championship last week. She was a six-time state champion in events dating back to 2022.

WVLT News reached out to Monroe County Schools to find out if grief counselors will be present at Tellico Plains High School on Monday.
