Storms, flooding possible for Maui, Hawaii Island starting Monday

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Your First Alert weather team has declared First warning days Monday and Tuesday for the islands of Maui and Hawaii.

A flood watch has been issued for these islands from late Sunday evening through Tuesday afternoon.

The National Weather Service in Honolulu said the flood watch will be in effect from 4 a.m. Monday through 6 p.m. Tuesday.

7 day forecast

A flood watch means that conditions are present that could cause flash flooding. Low lying areas and roads prone to flooding may be closed due to runoff during heavy rainfall.

Rapid runoff can also cause property damage in more populated areas.

A plume of deep tropical moisture will be ushered in by a trough in the south of the state. This will be combined with upper level disturbances that will bring heavy rain showers and the chance of isolated thunderstorms.

The threat of heavy rain will be greatest along the windward parts of the islands.
