Who is not allowed to vote in the US elections? Age, residency and citizenship requirements

It’s almost time for the US elections, one of the most important moments of this century, and some even call it the most important in the country’s history.

As such, Being prepared to vote is paramount, and knowing whether or not you qualify is all part of the process.

The US government website offers the following guidance for people WHO CAN VOTE in the 2024 US presidential election:

Who can vote in the US elections?

Area American citizen (in some areas non-citizens may only vote in local elections), including:
- American citizens live outside the United States.
- American citizens who were born abroad and have has never lived in the United States.
- Double burgers living in the United States or abroad
Meet your state residency requirements
- You can be experiencing homelessness and still meet these requirements.
Are 18 years old on or before election day
- This is possible in almost every state register to vote before you turn 18 if you turn 18 on election day.
- Some states allow this 17-year-olds who will be 18 on Election Day are eligible to vote in the primaries.
Are registered to vote before the voter registration deadline in your state. North Dakota does not require voter registration.

Who can’t vote in the US elections?

Non-citizens, including permanent legal residents, cannot vote in federal, state and most local elections.
Some people can’t vote after they’ve been convicted of a crime or if they are is currently in time for other types of crimes. Rules are different in every state.
Some people who have a mental disability you may not be able to vote.
US citizens living in US territories (Puerto Rico, Guam, the US Virgin Islands, the Northern Mariana Islands, American Samoa, and the US Small Outlying Islands) cannot vote for president in the general election.
