Citadel Director of Athletics Mike Capaccio announces his retirement

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) – Mike Capaccio, who has been the Director of Athletics at The Citadel for the past 6 years, announced his retirement from the position Thursday morning. He will remain in the role until his replacement is hired and will then transition to a new role as Senior Advisor to the Citadel President for Athletic Financing.

“I really enjoyed my time at The Citadel, first with our foundation and then as athletic director,” Capaccio said in a school statement. “It was an honor to work with the cadets, students, coaches and fans as our teams competed in all of our sports. We have laid the foundation for success across all programs and I look forward to attending games and rooting for the Bulldogs for many years to come.”

The school said a national search for a replacement will begin soon.

“I want to thank Mike for his tireless dedication to The Citadel and his passion for our teams and athletes,” said The Citadel President Gen. Glenn M. Walters, USMC (Retired), ’79, in the release. “Mike has played an important role in recruiting top-tier coaches, renovating Johnson Hagood Stadium, raising funds for athletic scholarships, and navigating a dynamic college sports landscape much different than when he began as a college athlete. . The Citadel family is grateful for his leadership.”

Capaccio has made some key hires for the school in recent years, bringing back former student Ed Conroy for his second stint at the school and former student Maurice Drayton to lead the football program. Last summer, Russell Triplett was also hired as the new baseball coach.
