Pune:

The father of the 17-year-old Pune driver, whose late-night drunken race in a Porsche claimed the lives of two 24-year-old engineers, had hatched an elaborate escape plan, but the cops have found.

Soon after an FIR was filed against him for letting his teenage son drive the luxury car, the prominent Pune real estate agent was on the run. To fool the cops, he left his home in his car and asked the driver to take the road to Mumbai. He told another driver to leave for Goa in his other car. On the way to Mumbai, he got out of the car and used a friend’s car to head towards Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, formerly known as Aurangabad. Multiple cars were involved to mislead cops about where he was heading, police said. The real estate agent also started using a new SIM card so police could not trace his number, police said.

When police learned he was in his friend’s car, they began tracking the vehicle using its GPS. A team from the Pune crime branch later identified him using footage from CCTV cameras on the route. Finally, during a late-night raid on a lodge in Sambhajinagar, the cops arrested the real estate agent. He will be presented in court today.

The Porsche crash on Saturday evening sparked national outrage after the teenager was released on bail within 15 hours in conditions many described as fragile. A local court asked him to write a 300-word essay about accidents, work with traffic police for 15 days and undergo counseling on his alcohol consumption.

Police have asked the juvenile justice board for permission to try the teenager – aged 17 years and eight months – as an adult. A decision on that plea is also expected today.

Aneesh Awadhiya and Ashwini Koshtha, both from Madhya Pradesh, were returning from a meeting on a bike when the Porsche, which was reportedly traveling at a speed of 200 kmph, hit them from behind. The two computer engineers died instantly.

Their families criticized the quick release given to the teenage driver and called the incident “murder, not an accident.” The teenager and his two friends were returning from a pub when the accident happened. Police also arrested the owners of two establishments and staff for serving alcohol to a minor.

Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar told NDTV last night that they were preparing an “unshakeable case”. “We have technical evidence coupled with corroborative evidence to build an unwavering case for this accused to be punished under relevant sections of the law,” he said.
