AI in the workplace? 3 things to consider before making Claude from Anthropic your colleague

Mike Krieger may be best known as the co-founder of Instagram, but he is now Chief Product Officer at Anthropic, making Claude a business-focused ChatGPT competitor with an equally powerful AI model.

Claude is available as a free, standalone chatbot, but Anthropic also offers paid plans for individuals and large organizations. Today Anthropic introduced a new feature that would allow people to use Claude throughout the day or even fully automate parts of their work.

Called “Computer Usage,” Claude integrates the feature into apps you already use and controls your PC “the way people do — by looking at a screen, moving a cursor, clicking buttons and typing text “.

Computing usage is currently limited to developers who sign up for the Claude API. But it comes about five months after Krieger joined Anthropic and received his marching orders from CEO Dario Amodei: Find out how you can make Claude useful at work.

Krieger tells PCMag that the platform has “millions” of unique users, but its main focus is growing the number of business accounts – already into the “tens of thousands” – by positioning its AI as an “invaluable assistant.” The problem is that most companies are still trying to figure out how to leverage AI and turn it from a popular byproduct into a revenue driver.

In an email, Krieger gave three tips for companies wanting to get started with AI.

  1. Identify specific ways AI can add immediate value. “Start with small pilots with clear goals and measurable results to gain experience and demonstrate ROI before scaling,” he writes.

  2. Invest in training and development for your entire company. “Ensure employees understand the capabilities and limitations of AI to enable effective implementation and responsible use.”

  3. Prioritize ethics and data security from the start. “Set clear policies for AI usage that align with company values ​​and comply with regulations. Remember that responsible AI adoption involves fostering a culture of innovation balanced with ethical awareness.”

The ethical considerations are diverse. Are these AIs putting people out of work, training them using stolen data, or offering completely wrong answers? Will people no longer be able to search for information themselves and become as dependent on chatbots as they are on TikTok, Instagram or X? Krieger argues that Claude won’t be as addictive as social media.

“Claude provides efficient, task-oriented support across different applications, delivering helpful results and enabling users to continue working independently,” he says. “Our models…are designed to increase productivity and problem solving, not to attract attention or create dependency.”

Krieger insists that Anthropic is “committed to responsible AI development guided by strict guidelines, extensive testing and collaboration with external experts.”

Anthropic’s CEO supported California’s now-enacted AI security law, which would have established new security and accountability mechanisms for large AI systems. At the same time, a group of authors is suing Anthropic for training its AI on copyrighted books, something the company has not publicly commented on.

AI brings with it a long list of technical unknowns. AI works differently than “traditional software,” says Krieger, as evidenced by how models like Claude evolve based on user feedback. While “likes” on Instagram tend to boost the poster’s ego, a “thumbs up” or “thumbs down” on a Claude response can fundamentally change the way the system responds to your next query.

This concept, called reinforcement learning, makes AI even more powerful and offers “increasingly valuable business solutions – a capability that goes well beyond social media platforms,” says Krieger. He expects that in five years Claude will “achieve expert-level competency” in many areas, such as healthcare, finance and engineering. Is your company ready to add Claude to the payroll?
