FIA rules Carlos Sainz over “dangerous” incident

Carlos Sainz was formally reprimanded by FIA stewards after the F1 Grand Prix of Sao Paulo.

The Ferrari driver crashed on lap 39 in Brazil.

He created a “potentially dangerous situation” by trying to drive while marshals were nearby and retrieve his car, the stewards ruled.

The FIA statement confirmed: “The driver crashed on his own. The marshals quickly arrived on the scene to recover the car.

“The driver removed the steering wheel, which indicated to the marshals that he was abandoning the car.

“The team then informed the driver that they believed the car could continue safely. The driver replaced the steering wheel as the marshals began feeding the recovery loop through the car’s roll bar.

“The driver admitted that he was not aware that the marshals had initiated the recovery procedure.

“The marshals, recognizing that the driver would attempt to restart, aborted the recovery attempt as the driver drove the car away.
