Eagles’ new-school defensive tackle ready to play for old-school Vic Fangio

Eagles’ new-school defensive tackle ready to play for old-school Vic Fangio

PHILADELPHIA – Old school is about to meet new school. Like, really, really a new school.

As Jalen Carter so wisely pointed out after Wednesday’s OTA practice: “In our group, I don’t think there’s anyone over 25.” We are very young.

This group is made up of the Eagles’ defensive tackles, who became much younger with the offseason retirement of veteran Fletcher Cox after clocking the clock in Philadelphia for the past 12 years.

Old school is Vic Fangio, the Eagles’ 65-year-old defensive coordinator.

Carter is only 23 years old. The “veteran” of the group is 25-year-old Milton Williams. Jordan Davis and Marlon Tuipulotu are both 24 years old. Moro Ojomo is the baby at 22 years old. Other players under 25 who could put pressure on the roster include undrafted free agent Gabe Hall, Thomas Booker and PJ Mustipher.

As first-round picks, Carter and Davis are the breed players, but Carter doesn’t think that necessarily means they’re the leaders of the group.

“I wouldn’t say that,” he said. “I would say a lot of people look up to us and whatnot, but I wouldn’t say we’re the leaders because we’re all young at the end of the day. We can all learn from each other.

“There are things I learned from Mo (Moro Ojomo), and we are in the same (draft) class. There are certain things he learned from me. I’m still learning from JD. We all work together to help each other improve.

It’s a new school.

Can the two schools coexist? Fangio took some of the new school guys in Miami badly when he spent his only year with the Dolphins a season ago.

They always complain about him. Safety Jevon Holland said recently that the Dolphins’ new DC is “a complete 180” from Fangio.

Carter is cool with old school. At least for now.

“I love Vic,” Carter said. “Old school, man. He’s fun to talk to. A good coach. …I’m passionate about old-fashioned football. If you know Apopka (Florida) High School, where I’m from, the town of Apopka, our coach was old school with everything we did.

“Running stadiums and stuff like that. So it’s always been hard, old-fashioned work. I am ready to be coached in any way. Old school, new school, whatever you want to call it.

The Eagles have some old-school players among them, including 33-year-old cornerback Darius Slay, and even he seems ready to be coached by an old-school guy like Fangio.

“He came here with a lot of energy,” Slay said. “He’s a guy who has worked with a lot of excellent veterans. Not once since I’ve been here as an Eagle has anyone had anything bad or negative to say about a DC because we know we have to work hard for them because that we want to win.

“I don’t know what happened there (in Miami), but my take here, he’s a great guy and I’ve heard nothing but good things about him. I had l I used to watch Aqib Talib and those guys, corners that played under his system and they always spoke highly of him.

For his part, Fangio left Miami, saying he didn’t see the negativity spewing out of South Florida. He moved to a new school in Philadelphia.
