College of Agricultural, Food and Environmental Sciences announces summer field days

The South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station hosts research station tours for the public each summer.

Each station, which is part of South Dakota State University and supports programs at several colleges and SDSU Extension, will be the site of field days with guided tours and presentations showcasing the research being conducted there . These tours are led by SDSU research and extension staff.

The West River Research Farm Field Day will be held on Tuesday, June 18, from 4 to 7 p.m. The station is located at 13370 Alkali Road, Sturgis.

Cottonwood Field Station field days will take place throughout the summer with events taking place on the following dates:

  • June 12 from 9 a.m. to noon, focusing on virtual fencing in practice. A meal will be provided.
  • July 29 from 9 a.m. to noon, focused on course monitoring. Refreshments will be provided.
  • August 22 from 9 a.m. to noon, with discussion on drones and their use in animal production. Refreshments will be provided.

Participants are encouraged, but not required, to attend all sessions. The Cottonwood Field Station is located at 23738 Fairview Road, Philip.

The field day at the Dakota Lakes Research Farm will take place on Thursday, June 27, from 3 p.m. to dusk. The farm is located at 21310 308th Ave., 17 miles east of Pierre on Highway 34.

The Southeast Research Farm Field Day will be held on Tuesday, July 9, from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. The station is located at 29974 University Road, Beresford.

The Northeast Research Farm field day will take place on Thursday, July 11, from 4 p.m. until dusk. The farm is located at 15710 455th Ave. on the South Shore, 2.5 miles west of Interstate 29 at exit 193.

The Oak Lake Field Station will be on hand for its first field day on Thursday, July 18, from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., with coffee and lunch provided. The station is located at 19862 483rd Ave., Astoria.

There is no cost to attend these events. An Eventbrite registration link will be posted before each field day to ensure a more accurate participant count.
