Man arrested in NN for unrestrained child arrested with illegal drugs and gun

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — A Newport News man was sentenced Thursday to six and a half years in prison after being arrested for illegal drug and gun possession, a news release said.

Daquan Lane, 29, was arrested on September 9, 2022, after Newport News police saw a 7-year-old child improperly restrained in the vehicle. During a traffic stop, officers saw a bag of suspected narcotics sticking out of Lane’s hoodie pocket.

Lane refused to leave the vehicle and officers discovered more drugs while attempting to remove him.

The bags of narcotics fell out of his hoodie pocket. NNPD recovered bags containing 8.37 grams of a mixture of heroin and fentanyl, 4.69 grams of a mixture of heroin and fentanyl, 8.19 grams of methamphetamine, 4.71 grams of cocaine and a flip phone. NNPD also searched the vehicle and discovered a loaded 9mm semi-automatic handgun, two digital scales containing narcotics residue, and approximately 140 grams of marijuana in 12 separate baggies.

Due to his felon status following an incident in 2013, Lane was not legally allowed to possess a firearm. In 2013, Lane was convicted of shooting into an occupied building, attempted wounding with intent, two counts of use/exhibition of a firearm in the commission of a felony and careless handling of a firearm.

On October 30, 2023, Lane pleaded guilty to possession with intent to distribute heroin and fentanyl, possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine, possession with intent to distribute cocaine, possession of a firearm fire in connection with a drug trafficking crime and being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition.
