New York Scammer Caught Posing as Federal Agent in Delaware Cash to Gold Scam

MILLSBORO, DE – Rakeshkumar Patel, a 35-year-old resident of Flushing, New York, was arrested for felony theft. The arrest followed a joint investigation involving the Delaware State Police and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

The investigation began in February when a Millsboro woman reported being scammed.

According to detectives, beginning in October of the previous year, a suspect posed as a federal agent and tricked the victim into converting his money into gold, which he pretended to transport to the U.S. Treasury for keep.

Patel was identified as a suspect in the scheme.

On May 20, Patel was apprehended near Millsboro and then taken to Troop 4 for processing. He was arraigned in Justice of the Peace Court 2 and is currently being held at the Sussex Correctional Facility on $103,000 cash bail. The investigation continues as authorities seek to identify additional suspects involved in the scam.
