Congolese civilians caught in the crossfire in the Kivus

Civilians have been stranded by fighting between armed groups around Goma, the capital of North Kivu province, forcing thousands of them to flee, according to Médecins Sans Frontières.

MSF said Goma was surrounded by several front lines, “with between 600,000 and 1 million displaced people crowded alongside the city’s two million residents.” The humanitarian organization said civilians had “no escape” due to the concentration of armed men in and around the densely populated camps.

“The camps for displaced people must be respected by all parties to the conflict and fighting nearby must stop,” MSF said in a statement.
