The announcement of the Dark Ages would be near and will have a “medieval-inspired world”

There have been a number of hints recently that an announcement for the next installment in the legendary Doom series could be coming, and now a new round of rumors have potentially revealed more about what we can expect. According to reliable insider Tom Henderson, the next big entry in id Software’s franchise is indeed coming soon and will be known as Doom: The Dark Ages.

According to Henderson, Doom: The Dark Ages has been in development for about four years, which makes sense since Doom Eternal was released in 2020. The game was developed under the codename “Year Zero” and the subtitle of The Dark Ages is quite literal, as the game is said to feature a “medieval-inspired Doom world.” Beyond that, we don’t know much: will the Doomslayer travel through time? Or, given Year Zero’s codename, could it be a prequel, showing a former Doomslayer battling demons in a historical setting? Either way, it seems like those who found 2016’s Doom and Doom Eternal perhaps a little the same are expecting something a little different.

Of course, take this with a grain of salt for now, but Henderson rarely misses, and once again, several reliable sources point to a Doom reveal at the upcoming Xbox Games Showcase in June. Xbox has faced plenty of criticism from once-loyal fans, as Xbox Series X/S sales stagnate, they bring old exclusives to other platforms, and shut down studios responsible for acclaimed games like Hi-Fi Rush and Prey. The Xbox Showcase will provide a first look at the next Call of Duty, and perhaps the next Gears title, so adding Doom to that lineup would really make it an exciting show for shooter fans.

The Xbox Games Showcase will air on June 9. What do you think ? Want to embark on a medieval adventure with some demons? Or does the concept seem a little strange to you?
