Watch a Wheel of Fortune Contestant Let Out a Shocked “What” After All-Time Wrong Answer

Usually, overthinking is a bad strategy in game shows. With time restrictions and other players competing against you, it is not advisable to be too careful. You have to be ready to intervene, sometimes before you are one hundred percent sure. However, from time to time, this over-eagerness can backfire spectacularly, for example if you are over Wheel of Fortune and blurts out something extremely dirty while trying to solve the riddle.

That’s what happened to contestant Tavaris earlier this week on the long-running hit game show. The category was ‘Phrase’ and with only a few letters in place he got a little prematurely excited, rang the bell and chose ‘Right In The Butt’. Aside from the fact that the first word was one letter too many, it wasn’t the worst guess in the world, but it did get a shocked reaction from the crowd and a “WHAT?” from one of his fellow players. Now, let’s be honest for a second. It’s not the worst Wheel of Fortune answer that we will even see this week. At least one in three episodes features a contestant guessing a phrase that isn’t even possible from the letters in play. Technically, their answer doesn’t fit, but it’s really not that far off. That being said, any time you add a sexual reference or something dirty, the clip is much more likely to go viral, even if the guess isn’t that far off. For example: Jeopardy once asked for a gardening tool, which also means an immoral pleasure seeker, and Ken Jennings answered “hoe” instead of “rake.” That was over a decade ago, and the music video still trends from time to time.

Fortunately, as the history of game shows tells us, Tavaris will be off the hook in a few weeks when someone else guesses something dirty or hilariously engages in his attempt. A viral game show’s final moment is still less than a month away, and if nothing else, it’ll have at least one hilarious storyline for the rest of its life.

As for Wheel of Fortune, the series is about to undergo its first significant changes in decades. Longtime host Pat Sajak will step down. Ryan Seacrest will take his place, and after some nervous contract negotiations, we now know Vanna White will hold on and continue in her role. I’ll definitely miss Pat, but I’m also excited about the new team and the inevitable viral moments that will keep coming.
