Co-creator of ‘OMITB’ says Meryl Streep and Martin Short ‘Happy in each other’ off-screen

Martijn Kort And Meryl Streep have been deny romantic rumors for almost a year, but the chemistry between them is undeniable Only murders in the building characters — so much so that one of the minds behind the show is now weighing in.

John Hoffman created the hit series Hulu Steve Martin and serves as both the show’s executive producer and writer. In a new interview, Hoffman said it was “incredible” to watch Streep, 75, and Short, 74, build their bond on screen — and off.

“You know, it’s one of the most unexpected turns, but I remember thinking, ‘God.’ “When I met Meryl, like I knew Marty, and when I saw the two of them working together in Season 3, I was just – it was incredible,” she said. Decision maker.

“We were laughing our heads off and they were just enjoying each other on screen, in every way off screen.”

Streep joined the cast in season 3 as Broadway star Loretta Durkin, who develops a relationship with Short’s character Oliver Putnam, and their storyline has had a particular impact on the actress.

Hoffman revealed that one day, after filming a scene on a ferry in Season 3, Streep “had tears in her eyes” and had waited until he left the boat to “say thank you”.

“I was like, ‘What?’ and she said, ‘I just got to do a scene that I really didn’t think I could do. To do romantic scenes at this age with this band, that’s just the best thing that ever happened,'” he recalled Stripe said.

Hoffman said he felt like “the luckiest man in the world to have (Streep) anywhere near a set that I was near,” so hearing her appreciate Loretta’s storyline felt like one of the most satisfying things.

“And I kept thinking, ‘I hope the world falls in love with this couple, like we all are,’” he said. “And that’s because of the magic they create together.”

While their characters’ chemistry is undeniable, in real life the actors continue to insist they’re just friends, despite speculation that started after PEOPLE confirmed last year that Streep had been divorced from her husband Don Gummer for six years.

In January, a rep for Short told PEOPLE that the pair are “just really good friends, nothing more,” and the actor himself later weighed in and shared Bill Maher“We’re not a couple, we’re just really good friends.”

Short later told PEOPLE it was “coincidental” that Streep joined the show as a love interest for his character. “They had already planned for me to have a theatrical experience and for there to be a love interest. So that was coincidental, but she just wanted to be on the show. She didn’t know anything about (the love story).”

Short’s friend and co-star does had some fun with the speculationalthough. On October 18, Martin, 79, posted a photo from last year with Streep and Short, although he added an emoji to cover his own face in the photo.

He left the post without a caption, prompting fans to speculate further in the comments, with one writing: “I’m taking this as confirmation. I’ve never been so invested in celebrity rumors.”
