Driver accused of killing woman in accident and talking about it on TikTok

A driver will stand trial accused of killing a pensioner and injuring a boy.

Leigh Sutherland is said to have been behind the wheel of a Ford Mondeo when it crashed into a Peugeot 108 driven by 77-year-old Margaret Allan on June 15, 2023.

The 30-year-old is also accused of breaching bail by talking about the incident in a TikTok video.

Prosecutors say the collision occurred on the Condorrat Ring Road, near Cumbernauld.

Sutherland’s car was said to be in a “dangerous condition”, including the battery not being properly secured and the anti-lock braking system not working.

It is alleged he drove at “extremely excessive speed”.

The charge of death by dangerous driving alleges he failed to maintain due diligence on the road, which resulted in the collision with Ms Allan’s car.

The victim was reportedly so seriously injured that he died in hospital on July 6, 2023.

A child in his car was also described as injured following the incident.

Sutherland faces a separate charge, which states he was granted bail by a sheriff on June 23, 2023.

The condition was that he made “no reference on any social media” to the accident or those involved.

However, it is claimed that on March 14, 2024, he mentioned the incident “in a video posted on TikTok.”

The case required a hearing at the High Court in Glasgow.

John Scullion KC said: “I appear on behalf of Leigh Sutherland. He pleads innocent.

The lawyer said a joint draft of the facts – evidence agreed between the prosecution and defense – should be agreed.

Lord Clark has settled a trial that is scheduled to begin on September 25, 2025.

Sutherland faced a second charge which included the charge of causing Miss Sutherland’s death. Allan while banned from the road.

Scullion said at the hearing that he also denies these allegations.

A separate test has been fixed for this and is expected to begin on October 6, 2025.

Sutherland, from Cumbernauld, remains on bail.
