Angamaly Crime Branch DySP caught feasting with goons by local cops, suspended

Kochi: The Angamaly police found themselves in a sticky situation on Monday during a crackdown on criminal gangs under Operation AAG (Action Against Goons). Cops led by Angamaly sub-inspector found their superior, Angamaly crime branch DySP MG Sabu, accepting hospitality from a local gang leader at his home during the raid. The DySP and three other police officers who accompanied him were suspended following the incident.

The incident occurred as part of the ongoing Operation AAG, aimed at curbing gang activities across the state. The DySP and others had arrived at the residence of famous goon Thammanam Faisal after visiting Gudalur. The SI and the team reached the spot while the DySp and others received hospitality from Faisal. Taken by surprise by the sudden arrival of the police, the DySP took refuge in the toilets.

The raid came amid increased surveillance of gang leaders, including Faisal, as part of the wider “Operation AAG” initiative. Police received intelligence suggesting the arrival of unidentified individuals at Faisal’s home, prompting rapid action.

Having learned of the police officers’ unexpected visit to the gang leader’s house, the Angamaly police quickly took the matter to higher authorities. The incident was promptly reported to the Rural Superintendent of Police (SP) and the Range Inspector General (IG). After investigation and recording of the statements of the police officers involved, a full report will be submitted to the Director General of Police (DGP).

Tammanam Faisal, also known as George, is one of the first criminals hit by KAAPA (Kerala Anti-Social Activities Prevention Act) in the state. Hailing from his hometown Tammanam, Ernakulam, Faisal earned his notorious reputation after moving to Puliyam, Angamaly. Despite his criminal past, Faisal recently claimed to have distanced himself from gang-related activities, focusing instead on running family businesses, including dumpsters and garbage trucks. However, recent incidents, such as the 2021 kidnapping and assault of a rival gang member named Johnny Anthony, have kept Faisal in the spotlight.
