Man struck and killed by vehicle on I-10 in west Phoenix

PHOENIX (AZFamily) – A man has died after being struck by a vehicle on Interstate 10 in west Phoenix early Friday morning.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety said troopers received calls around 3:20 a.m. of a person walking on I-10 westbound near 27th Avenue and crossing the median.

Shortly thereafter, the unknown man was walking in the eastbound HOV lane when he was struck by a Hyundai SUV. The driver of that vehicle remained at the scene. It is not believed that a disability played a role in the accident.

DPS said the man was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries. DPS Sergeant Eric Andrews on scene later confirmed he died at the hospital.

Sergeant Andrews said it is unknown why the man was walking on the highway.

The I-10 freeway was closed eastbound at “The Stack”, the interchange with I-17. All eastbound traffic was diverted to the northbound I-17 exit.

Officers began reopening the highway around 5:45 a.m
