Richard Mille’s latest watch was inspired by the new McLaren W1

It took the McLaren W1 less than a week to inspire its first strange watch.

The British automaker’s long-time collaborator, Richard Mille, has just launched the RM 65-01 McLaren Automatic Split-Seconds Chronograph W1. The bold watch is the fourth fruit of a years-long partnership between the two brands, both among the most respected names in their respective sectors.

McLaren’s W1 is the continuation of the brand’s most revered vehicles, the F1, and its successor, the P1. Each car has been a true halo model, showcasing the brand’s most advanced design techniques, delivering boundary-pushing performance and built in small numbers. Sure enough, the W1 looks like a Transformer and is powered by a motorsport-derived twin-turbocharged V-8 with hybrid assistance that produces a ferocious 1,275 horsepower. It’s no surprise that the vehicle costs $2.7 million and is limited to just 399 examples.

Fittingly, Richard Mille claims the RM 65-01 model is his most powerful watch yet. The watch is powered by the Swiss company’s high-performance RMA4C automatic chronograph movement. It beats at 5 Hz, or approximately 36,000 vibrations per hour, and can record two times with tenth-of-a-second accuracy, according to the watchmaker. The 480-piece movement sits on chassis-mount rubbers and features a “quick winding” system that allows users to quickly charge its 60-hour power reserve using a special pusher made from Quartz TPT.

Performance isn’t the only area where the watch compares to its namesake. It also presents an attractive appearance. Its case, which measures 43.84 x 49.94 x 16.19 mm, is made from multi-sided TPT carbon, features Richard Mille’s thinnest bezel yet and sports a design influenced by the supercar’s lines. The skeletonized dial, in turn, is made of titanium, shares a pattern with the W1’s wheels and has various color details, synonymous with the automaker. Its signature color, Papaya Orange, is also abundant, appearing on the dial, crowns and, most importantly, the rubber strap.

Richard Mille plans to build 500 examples of the RM 65-01 McLaren Automatic Split-Seconds Chronograph W1. It will reportedly cost 320,000 Swiss francs, or about $374,000. The first 399 will be offered to W1 owners. This means there will be around 100 examples for those who just want to complete their McLaren-themed Richard Mille watch collection.
