People are shocked to learn that small balconies outside windows have a purpose

The British are realizing the true purpose of those tiny balconies you see with no space to relax or pop your potted plants.

You’ve probably seen them before, balcony railings that seem a little lacking. They are called balconettes or Juliet balconies and have sparked quite a debate on Reddit.

A photo of two of these balconettes was recently posted to the r/CasualUK subreddit with the caption: “What’s the point of building these ‘balconies’?”

The thread didn’t lack a laugh or two. One Reddit user joked that they were perfect for “standing at the window in your dressing gown” while puffing on a cigarette. Another felt it was a godsend for “carrying bulky furniture that doesn’t fit around the tight turn of the stairs.”

But some people had the real answers. “It’s a Juliet balcony. They’re there to maximize the view and air circulation,” one said, adding jokingly: “You can stand there in the morning with the door open, a coffee in hand, maybe even your equipment outside, who knows!” “

Safety is another reason for these original features, as someone pointed out: “It’s not really a balcony, it’s the guardrail.” Having a door there, instead of a window, means you can have a bigger view, more light and more ventilation. you don’t want anyone arguing, hence the railing.
