Airbnb “Mothmanor” with Escape Room Now Open in WV

FAYETTEVILLE, W.Va. (WBOY) — A new cryptid-themed Airbnb hosted its first guests last week, and the owners say bookings are already going fast.

“Mothmanor” is the third themed Airbnb that owners Nate Adams and Rachel Adkins have renovated in the Fayetteville area. Their Wizard House, inspired by Harry Potter, and Game House have already seen great success.

Mothmanor has two bedrooms and can sleep up to six people just a mile from the New River Gorge Bridge, but guests can expect much more than a place to sleep. The house is decorated with all things monster. The owners took inspiration from West Virginia-specific cryptids like Mothman, the Flatwoods Monster, the Grafton Monster and the Sheepsquatch, but also from monsters in general. Visitors can expect to see aliens, giant squid and sasquatch.

Adams told 12 News it’s one of only a few escape room Airbnbs in the country. Guests can expect an approximately two-hour escape experience built into the living room that incorporates every room except the bathroom. He and his wife came up with the unique 24-puzzle escape room scenario themselves.

The couple has been renovating the house since March 2023, and Adams said about 10 months of the 13-month project involved simply getting the rental back into habitable condition. After that, they spent three months transforming the space into the unique, immersive experience it is today.

Adams said they are always collecting unique artwork and furniture for future projects. So they used many items from their collection and pieces from regional artists obtained at the Freefolk Brewery Cryptid Bash. Adams told 12 News his favorite detail of the rental is the painting of the Flatwoods Monster that says “IT HAS POCKETS.”

Although the listing photos clearly show the uniqueness of the stay, Adams said it’s difficult to capture the ambiance and silliness of the home without going inside. Adams said that every time he walks into the house, he just thinks, “This is really cool.” »

Adams told 12 News they have a few additional ideas for future projects in the Fayetteville area, including a fully immersive, large-scale art building and a horror-themed Airbnb; they keep about 150 porcelain dolls when it comes time to create the “Creepy House”.

Mothmanor is available to rent on Airbnb for $130-$200 per night, depending on dates. However, keep in mind that there is a hefty $125 cleaning fee, which the listing says includes the price of resetting the escape room.
