Creator of deleted Netflix series teases epic return five years after shocker’s cancellation sparked fan outrage

The mind behind a hit Netflix drama series in 2019 has said he is trying to find ways to bring back the beloved series after fans demanded “closure” following the show’s shock cancellation.

Show bosses and the streaming service received massive backlash from viewers after The Society ended on an almighty cliffhanger.

Today, five years after the release of the first season, disappointed fans could be treated to a brand new opus in the works.

The beloved Netflix series premiered on the streaming platform in May 2019 with ten nail-biting episodes.

The eerie thriller follows a group of unsuspecting teenagers who are displaced from their hometown on a school trip and thrown into an identical kingdom without adult supervision.

Kathryn Newton, Gideon Adlon, Olivia DeJonge, Toby Wallace and Jacques Colimon played the main cast of teenagers, who were desperate to understand their predicament and how their lives had changed in the blink of an eye.

The teenagers quickly established their new community and created rules to maintain public order.

However, shortly after the group settled in, things started to spiral out of control, ending with a Lord of the Flies style cliffhanger.

Viewers learned that the teens’ parents were still very much alive in “reality” and believed their children were dead in some way.

Since the end of the finale of the first series of The Society, viewers have been wondering where the school buses carrying the students went after disappearing into thin air and whether the two timelines would ever be connected again.

TV bosses initially renewed the program for a second season, but it never came to fruition.

Since the show’s axing, fans have scrutinized creator Christopher Keyser’s comments on social media about another outing.

They turned to X and begged Netflix to release more episodes so they could get their much-needed “closure.”

One user pleaded: “Bring back the entire cast and move on, we as a society will ignore the fact that they have aged.” »

“OH MY GOD?! Please, I’m begging you, I’ve literally never wanted a show to come back more than The Society. I need closure! A second person agreed.

A third viewer said angrily: “We have been robbed. This show was renewed and then canceled when it should have been postponed. We deserve another season.

Another begged: “Even if it’s one more season, GOOD!” Just tell us WTF happened in this city.

While someone else followed him with: “When I say I would sell my soul for that!” This would be my greatest victory.

Show bosses later revealed that The Society had ultimately been canceled due to the global pandemic.

Even though years have passed since the last release, fans’ calls for more episodes have not gone unanswered.

Touched by the huge response the first season received, creator Christopher Keyse said those behind the camera were always trying to find ways to move the story forward.

It was even revealed that viewers were set to receive new episodes in the form of a graphic novel before the publishing company was liquidated.

“This was not a normal cancellation. It wasn’t about not having an audience, or we didn’t believe in it anymore,” Christopher told Variety.

“There was a global crisis that changed all of our lives in the year we managed to get through it.

“I have constant conversations with a group of writers and Marc Webb (executive producer) about how we could bring this back in some way.

“We don’t have an answer yet, and I wouldn’t count on it, but I don’t do that with every canceled show.”

He added: “The public still wants to talk about it. They always get emotional and want questions answered, and then new questions are asked.

“I just don’t know if the world is going to work in a way that works for us, but we’ll keep trying for a while because it gets under my skin as well.”

Remaining reserved about what happens next, Christopher confirmed that his team had already stretched the storylines.

He explained: “It really feels like this thing that we loved and were ready for was taken away from me more than anything I’ve ever done.

“It’s true for the writers and Marc Webb, with whom I produced the series.

“It feels like it stopped in the middle of the action, but we knew a lot of what was going to happen on the other side.

“There’s also an emotional thing that happens when the audience reaches out to us and constantly says, ‘Tell me what happened.’ When is he coming back? It was especially poignant for us because we were closer than I think most shows are, to being ready to start again.

In August 2020, during the global COVID-19 pandemic, Netflix bosses canceled The Society and another beloved series, I Am Not Okay With This.

At the time, the streaming giant released a statement saying, “We have made the difficult decision not to move forward with the second season of The Society and I am not okay with that.

“We are disappointed to have to make these decisions due to the circumstances created by Covid, and we are grateful to these creators, including Jonathan Entwistle, Christy Hall, Shawn Levy, Dan Levine, Dan Cohen and Josh Barry of 21 Laps Entertainment for I Je do not agree with this; Chris Keyser, Marc Webb and Pavlina Hatoupis for The Society and all the writers, cast and crew who worked tirelessly to make these shows for our members around the world.

Following the streamer’s announcement, actress Kathryn, who played Allie Pressman, took to her social media page to show her appreciation with a live video.

She said: “I just wanted to say thank you to all the fans who are following The Society at the moment.

“I just received the news this morning and I am heartbroken, so heartbroken.”

She added: “Save The Society is a global trend and I couldn’t be more proud.

“I couldn’t be more proud. I wish he was saved too.”

The actress has also starred in other shows such as Gary Unmarried and Big Little Lie.

Gideon, who played Rebecca Gelb, admitted the news was “a bit of a gut punch”, but believes “everything happens for a reason”.
