I was surprised when a Gen Z candidate asked why my company doesn’t offer breaks like others.

Barely keeping my composure, I remembered the article, “I Interviewed 30 Gen Z Candidates, But Didn’t Hire Any,” which reminded me of a recent experience.

As a recruiter, I frequently interview young Gen Z candidates. Last month, a candidate asked a question that left me speechless: “Why do other companies only require eight hours a day but offer breaks for breakfast, lunch, and naps? while your company requires nine hours of straight work, with none?”

After regaining my composure, I asked, “Where did you get this information about other companies?”

They responded, “It’s in every online job posting.”

Although tempted to say, “Then why don’t you sign up there?” I realized that the candidate lacked experience and life skills. Instead, I smiled and said, “There’s always a higher mountain to climb. If you keep thinking the grass is greener somewhere else, when will you be satisfied? Do you think you’re ready for that higher mountain? If you’re confident , why are you here, comparing and complaining?” Needless to say, I didn’t hire them.

HR later informed me of their feedback in which they thanked “Mr. Interviewer”. Honestly, I wanted to thank them too – at least they showed their true colors from the beginning. If I had hired them, I probably would have been left with a headache.

Many Gen Z candidates today appear to have inflated egos despite a lack of experience and knowledge. Still, I don’t dislike them. They are friendly and teachable, although they require more effort than previous generations. But with the right guidance, they are sharp and ready to learn.
