Hoopes Park updates a key piece from the upcoming Auburn City Council meeting

The Auburn City Council will convene Thursday for a meeting focused on a range of issues impacting the city, including the Veterans Day proclamation, major repair plans for Hoopes Park and critical financial resolutions.

The session, scheduled for 5 p.m. at Memorial City Hall, will begin with a ceremonial proclamation in honor of Veterans Day issued by Mayor Jimmy Giannettino. The proclamation recognizes the sacrifices of veterans and highlights this year’s theme: “A Legacy of Loyalty and Service.” Veterans and community members are invited to observe the declaration as Auburn prepares to commemorate Veterans Day on November 11.

A highlight of the meeting will be a presentation by Public Works Superintendent Mike Talbot on the extent of repairs needed at Hoopes Park. The southwest pond wall, originally built in the 1920s, is showing signs of deterioration, prompting the city to obtain a $150,000 grant from the Dormitory Authority of the State of New York (DASNY). The winter repair project will focus on sediment accumulation, drainage structure upgrades and a redesign of upstream flow paths to reduce long-term sediment buildup, according to city documents.

Council members will also vote on a series of financial resolutions, including approving a $20,000 property sale at 10 Nelson Street. The city, which acquired the multifamily property through tax foreclosure, is about to transfer it to a buyer who wants to rehabilitate it within two years.

Additionally, the council will consider establishing a debt reserve for the unissued bond proceeds from the North Division Street Bridge project, which is expected to limit future budget impacts. Other resolutions include approving budget adjustments for the fiscal years ending June 2024 and June 2025 to cover unexpected expenses in key areas such as emergency vehicle maintenance and diversity training.

The meeting is open to the public and will be streamed live on the city’s website.
