Kanlaon unrest leads to flight cancellations

Several flights from Manila to cities in the Visayas were canceled on Tuesday, June 4, due to the continued volcanic activity of Mount Kanlaon, the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) announced.

NAIA said Cebu Pacific, Air Asia and Philippine Airlines’ PAL Express have issued separate advisories, informing travelers of changes in their flight schedules following the eruption of Mount Kanlaon on Monday evening (June 3).

As of 7:20 a.m. Tuesday, the NAIA said the following flights had been canceled:

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said alert level 2 remained over Mount Kanlaon, which experienced an explosive six-minute eruption Monday evening. It has recorded at least 43 volcanic earthquakes, based on the latest monitoring measurements from the state seismic agency.

Kanlaon is an active andesitic stratovolcano located straddling the provinces of Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental in the Negros Island region. It is located about 30 kilometers (19 miles) southeast of Bacolod City.
