The notice follows an investigation into whether a cruise ship violated state rules by coming too close to Kaua’i’s Nāpali Coast.

The DLNR launched the investigation after community members expressed concerns about the cruise ship traveling within 3,000 feet of shore.

According to the DLNR, photographs taken by residents appear to show the ship much closer to shore.

On May 29, the DLNR Division of Resource Conservation and Enforcement concluded the investigation and said there was no definitive evidence to determine whether the cruise ship violated any rules of the ‘State.

Officials said the incident created enormous anxiety in the community because the area is highly protected.

We recognize the contributions of the cruise ship industry to the state’s economy. However, DLNR’s mission is to ensure that Hawaii’s valuable and unique natural and cultural resources are protected now and in perpetuity. We advise industry that DLNR and the community will closely monitor activities not only along the Nāpali Coast, but also in our state’s ocean waters.
