A case at OP Jindal Global University in Sonipat recently drew attention to the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in academic assignments, leading to a legal dispute. An LLM student of the university failed for allegedly using AI to complete his assignment, which led to him challenging the university’s decision in the Punjab-Haryana High Court. The student, identified as Kaustubh Shakkarwar, argued that he was not given a fair chance to explain himself, claiming that the university’s examination controller and the unfair means committee had not given him an opportunity to be heard before submitting their made a decision.

The controversy started when a professor at OP Jindal Global University discovered that the student had used AI tools to help with his assignment. In response, the professor labeled the student a failure in the subject. Angered by the outcome, Kaustubh appealed to the Punjab-Haryana High Court, arguing that the decision was unfair and that he was denied a fair trial. Justice Jasgurpreet Singh Puri, who heard the case, heard the student’s appeal, and the Supreme Court has since issued a notice to the university demanding it respond to the matter.

Kaustubh Shakkarwar is a resident of Hyderabad Estate, Mumbai. He studies LLM in Intellectual Property Rights and Technology Law. According to the petition, the university had asked him to prepare an assignment on the subject of law and justice in the world of globalization. The student says the university has not yet presented sufficient evidence confirming the use of AI-generated content. He also wondered whether there is a clear rule banning the use of AI in exams. This case sheds light on the growing influence of AI in education, as students increasingly rely on technology as a tool for assignments and courses. It raises important questions about academic integrity, the role of AI in education, and the responsibilities of educational institutions in adapting to technological advances.

The final decision in this case could have implications for academic policy and the permitted use of AI tools in educational settings.
