Beggars in this Indian smart city earn Rs 2 lakh per month: reports

The average monthly income in India is reported to be Rs 32,000 by 2024. This implies that half of India’s population earns less than Rs 32,000 every month, while the other half earns more than the average income. According to a report by Business Standard, the monthly average income of a wage earner in urban India was Rs 21,647 in 2023. However, did you know what the monthly income of a beggar in an Indian Smart City could be? What if it is Rs 2 lakh per month? Sounds shocking, right?

We generally come across beggars seeking alms at temples, road junctions or other busy places. However, it is certainly shocking to know that the annual income of beggars in Hyderabad averages between Rs 18 and 24 lakh. A few families practice this full-time profession and are said to have full control over traffic intersections
in the three committees – Hyderabad, Cyberabad and Rachakonda.

This shocking report surfaced in 2023 after police spoke to some beggars. After a crackdown on the ‘beggar mafia’ in Hyderabad, the police have arrested several beggar families.

An official of the Hyderabad Commissioner’s Task Force revealed that the entire family, including husband, wife, four to five children and elders, are taking over the intersections. They do not allow others to seek alms there. These beggar families target rewarding intersections such as Paradise, Jubilee Hills Checkpost, KBR Park, Masab Tank, Abid Road, Tank Bund, Koti Women’s College, Chandrayangutta and Mehdipatnam.

They (beggars) divide the intersections among themselves and the elders intervene if a dispute arises. After discussions, they reach an amicable solution and sufficient time blocks or junctions are determined between the groups.

The official also said that they arrived at the intersections around 10 am in the morning and sought alms until the evening. They travel in auto-rickshaws. While coming back, they carry liquor or toddy and biryani packets after pocketing a handsome amount. Moreover, many of them are involved in money lending.

Moreover, some unscrupulous persons, seduced by the income of these beggars, began to exploit the mafia and employ physically handicapped, weak and old people, children and women.

At the end of the day, they paid Rs 200 to each of their ‘recruits’, apart from providing food and shelter.

According to earlier reports, Jubilee Hills police have arrested a man identified as Ajit Pawar (28). He owned eight vehicles that were seized and a few houses in Karnataka. He employed 23 people, including children. Police have learned that he invested in the fund business with the earnings of beggars from his begging mafia gang that he operates.
