Man reports shooting at man who attacked him; police find victim after crash on way to hospital – Twin Cities

A murder investigation is underway after a man was shot in St. Paul’s North End on Monday evening. A driver took him to the hospital and collided with another vehicle in downtown St. Paul, police said.

Police were notified around 7:30 p.m. when a man called reporting he had been attacked in his vehicle in the 500 block of Front Avenue. He said he shot the man who attacked him and may have injured him, according to Sgt. Mike Ernster, a police spokesman. According to the caller, the man got into a red car and left the area.

Shortly thereafter, an accident involving a red vehicle and another vehicle occurred at 12th and Cedar streets. There was a man in the car with a gunshot wound. Good Samaritans on the scene assisted officers with first aid, while St. Paul Fire Department medics responded, Ernster said. Medics pronounced the man shot dead at the scene.

The driver of the other vehicle reported minor injuries.

Investigators are working to determine what led to the shooting. The man who initially called about the attack spoke with homicide detectives as of Monday evening, Ernster said.

The driver of the red car was also talking to police. Investigators are “talking to anyone who has information about this case,” Ernster said.

Police said they will release the name of the man who was fatally shot after the Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed it.

The murder occurred on the 27th of the year in St. Paul, and followed a Murder on Sunday evening. This time last year there were 28 murders in the city.

The St. Paul Police Department has 26 homicides this year as the department’s data covers cases investigated by the city’s police department. Another one murder in St. Paul this year was investigated by Metro Transit Police.

In Sunday’s killing, prosecutors charged a 64-year-old man Monday with fatally stabbing another resident of his apartment building in the Summit-University area.
