Radio Havana Cuba | Cuba is preparing for Tropical Storm Rafael

During the meeting, governors of provinces in the cyclone alert phase discussed evacuation plans, sewer maintenance, preparations for evacuation centers, medical teams, measures to protect fishermen and other measures.

Havana, November 5 (RHC) Cuba is currently redoubling efforts to protect its people and economic assets from the impending impact of Tropical Storm Rafael, which is expected to hit the western part of the island within the next 48 hours.

According to President Miguel Díaz-Canel, chairman of the National Defense Council, the country is fully prepared for the storm.

At a meeting on Monday, the head of state called for better preventive measures in high-risk and remote areas that could become isolated. He emphasized the need for constant monitoring of the condition of dams and reservoirs, and ordered the activation and strengthening of all management centers.

He also ordered the preparation of alternative channels of communication for the population, including the use of loudspeakers and direct communication with individuals.

The President also provided a comprehensive inventory of available resources in each region and mobilized emergency teams of electricians, water workers and construction crews to begin recovery work as quickly as possible.

He urged caution along coastal areas to prevent sea intrusion and urged harvesting as much produce as possible ahead of the storm’s passage. Moreover, he stressed the importance of increased pruning and drainage of trees in urban and rural areas, as well as intensified waste collection.
