Cat brings live mouse home, owner can’t handle what they do next

A domestic cat gave up its hunting instincts and instead invited its prey for dinner.

Abbie Doctor, an aesthetics nurse from Gloucester, England, captured the bizarre moment her cat, Chewie, brought a live mouse into the houseand immediately brought it along for something to eat.

My cats bring in mice Almost every day, but unfortunately they are usually dead,” the doctor said Newsweek. “This time he came in alive and we chased him around the house for a while.

“We were watching TV and the little face appeared just under the TV cabinet,” she explained.

“Then he ran to the food bowls and the cat just looked at them and let the mouse eat!”

Doctor shared the clip to her TikTok account @abbiedoctor on November 3, which has more than 124,000 likes and 1.2 million views to date.

Chewie the cat caught a mouse and brought it inside. But instead of killing it, he let the mouse have a meal.

It shows the little mouse on a plate of wet and dry cat food, helping himself to the meal without haste or panic, while the cat hovers nearby and looks at it, but doesn’t even try to catch it.

As the video progresses, Chewie comes closer and sniffs the mouse, who casually nibbles on his food. But Chewie quickly loses interest and instead goes to check out a nearby cat toy.

“Mine cat brought in a mouse and sat him down for dinner,” Doctor wrote of the clip, adding, “It gives Tom and Jerry.”

According to cat food company Purina, cats are allowed to bring home their prey to have a safe place in their own territory to eat or store the animal. This was initially thought to be a sign of affection towards their owners, or a gift for their owner who was unable to hunt on their own.

This is normal cat behavior and comes with owning a cat that has access to the outdoors, Purina adds.

At one point the cat came closer to the mouse and sniffed it. But he quickly lost interest and instead went to look at a nearby cat toy.

TikTok users responded in a big way, with one commenter worrying that the mouse was “frozen in fear,” but the doctor replied: “No, he was quite chilly, walking around and eating.”

“The fact that he has a mouse toy kills me,” laughed another, while one wrote: “Imagine the mouse going back to his family and trying to explain how a cat didn’t eat him and put him in gave food instead.”

And someone asked, “I need an update. Where’s the mouse now.”

Doctor revealed the next part of the adventure Newsweekexplaining that the mouse “stayed for a while, but then we managed to capture it and release it into our greenhouse.”

The doctor was impressed by the response to her video and called the number of views “crazy.”

But, as she added, there are “so many cat lovers,” that might not be surprising.
